This ancient Icelandic symbol was the first Nordic compass. As the Huld manuscript says: "If this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known".
It consists of eight Viking rune staves, each representing the cardinal (North, South, West, East) and intercardinal directions (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast).
The Vikings used to draw or carve this protective symbol on their ships, to help them find way back home safely. On a darker note, in the Galdrabook (a grimoire) it is said that this symbol should be drawn with blood on a person’s forehead. As such, it also had not only protective, but also intimidating quality (something very valuable for Vikings on the battlefield).
